Driver protection insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The driver protection insurance is a voluntary insurance for personal injury to the driver's own fault accidents.

Insured risk and insured persons

The driver protection insurance thus covers the damage that is not borne by the opposing motor vehicle liability insurance if the policyholder is responsible for the accident , nor the property damage with which the own property damage can be insured by a comprehensive insurance in the event of self-inflicted accidents . It is therefore a residual damage insurance. Usually, insurance contracts are offered for driver protection insurance that insure the authorized driver of the vehicle. This can be the policyholder himself, his spouse, his children or other authorized persons. Some insurers only offer this protection for drivers who are at least 23 years old.

Insurance benefits

In principle, the insurer of a driver protection insurance assumes the services to cover personal injury that would have to be undertaken by a third party liability insurance whose policyholder would have caused the accident. However, the services of others take precedence. This means, for example, that medical treatment costs that are covered by the health insurance are excluded from the insurance benefits of the driver protection insurance. Private accident insurance does not generally cover these benefits. Unlike accident insurance, which is basically a sum insurance , driver protection insurance only covers damage that has actually occurred. Typical services that a driver protection insurance covers due to an accident are:

  • personal injury compensation
  • possible loss of earnings
  • Accidental domestic help
  • Handicapped accessible renovation of the apartment
  • Survivor's pension

The amount of insurance is limited to eight to 15 million euros for most of the insurers' offers. Some of these benefits may, however, be considerably limited in the amount of benefits in the general insurance conditions and may also be significantly below the specific damage. In some contracts, for example, household help is limited to a maximum of 500 euros per month.

Exclusions

In general, damage caused intentionally is already legally excluded from insurance cover by the Insurance Contract Act. Driving under the influence of drugs or illegal alcohol also leads to exclusion from insurance. In the event of damage caused by gross negligence, the insurer is entitled to reduce its benefits proportionally.

Premium amount

As a rough rule of thumb, the policyholder pays around 10 percent of the amount of the vehicle insurance premium as consideration to the insurer for driver protection insurance.
