Falkenstein (Thuringia)

Falkenstein in the Thuringian Forest

The Falkenstein is located southeast of the small town Tambach-Dietharz in the Schmalwassergrund and is the most important rock formation in the Thuringian Forest . It consists of porphyry ( quartz porphyry and porphyrite ). Its valley side is 96 meters high. Due to its hillside location (the mountain side is approx. 25 meters high) it is only noticeable when you are almost directly in front of it. Due to its altitude near the Rennsteig , the climate is also very montane. In 1852 it was first climbed by the Tambach glassmaker Jacob Zimmermann. There are now many climbing routes with different levels of difficulty. The best way to get there is via a driveway closed to motor vehicles in the Schmalwassergrund along the Schmalwasser dam , from Tambach-Dietharz by bike or on foot (approx. 10 km). There is a mountain guard hut at the foot of the Falkenstein.
