A drop weight tester is used to shred large-sized scrap parts, especially castings.

function

A weight ( bear or pear ) (500–2000 kg) is lifted in a tower (height ≈ 8 m) by means of a cable pull and dropped onto the piece of scrap lying on a solid foundation ( scabot ) that is to be crushed. The fall bear with its kinetic energy smashes the scrap. To increase the height of fall, the foundation can also be arranged in a pit. A massive cladding around the drop weight mechanism prevents scrap splinters from flying around and improves sound insulation.

history

Drop weight devices for shredding scrap are still used today; in the historical context, drop hammers driven by human power (i.e. not hydraulically or pneumatically ) are also referred to as drop weight devices.
