Sketch of a folding spindle

A folding spindle (also called a spiral lifting cylinder) is a machine element in which two wound steel strips - one of which has a groove - are pushed into one another in such a way that the translational movement that occurs can be used to lift loads.

With column diameters of 0.15 to 0.46 m, the lifting heights are 3.5 to 12.2 m. Care must be taken to ensure that the tension is maintained during operation, since this is the only way to ensure that the metal strips forming the helical column are held together.

Folding spindles are used e.g. B. in theater operation for moving lifting platforms .
