Famulus (painter)

Wall painting attributed to Famulus

Famulus (mostly Fabullus ) was a Roman painter who lived and worked under Nero .

Famulus is described by Pliny (35, 37). Famulus painted the Domus Aurea , Nero's palace in Rome . Pliny calls him grave and serious. He is said to have never painted in a work smock, only in his toga . His painting style is said to have been lively and rich , but this description is distorted in the surviving manuscripts.

Famulus is the only ancient artist of whom we have both a contemporary judgment and at least parts of his works. In the Domus Aurea there are in fact many wall paintings , some of which are tentatively attributed to him, although different painters probably worked here and the exact assignment of certain paintings is therefore problematic.
