Mardi Gras customs

The Faschingszoll or fool's tariff is a regional tradition at the time of Carnival or Mardi Gras . In areas of carnival strongholds, children and young people usually block smaller streets with ropes or wooden slats on Shrove Tuesday and then demand a fee from the drivers, usually in the form of sweets or coins.

Legal

From a legal point of view, the fool's duty is inadmissible and in particularly severe cases can even be punished as coercion or dangerous interference with road traffic . However, in harmless cases, the police usually refrain from pursuing them, provided that the children allow non-paying drivers to continue driving immediately and the cordon does not pose any particular danger (e.g. due to invisible barriers). However, the legal guardians should always be aware of their duty of supervision and should not leave children unattended during such activities.
