Fatih mosque

The Fatih Mosque ( Turkish Fatih Camii , Conqueror Mosque ), also called Mescheder Mosque , is a mosque in Meschede . The building, erected between 2001 and 2008, was the first free-standing mosque to be built in the Sauerland .

From the end of the 1970s, Turkish-Muslim guest workers met in Meschede, initially in changing rooms such as rented apartments, barracks and garages for prayer.

From 1988 the first mosque in Meschede was available in a half-timbered house on Arnsberger Strasse. The mosque was named Fatih Mosque. It was more like a backyard mosque . In addition to the prayer room, this mosque also had a Koran school and a tea room . The imam (prayer leader) had his official apartment in the attic of this building. On September 21, 1980 the Turkish-Islamic Cultural Association was founded, which in 1984 was renamed the DITIB-Turkish Islamic Community in Meschede and joined the umbrella organization Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DITIB).

In May 2001 the Turkish-Islamic community in Meschede decided to build a representative mosque. The association bought the former premises of the former coffin factory Wienand in Jahnstrasse 3. The association had over three hundred members at that time.

On November 11, 2001, the foundation stone for the Fatih Mosque was laid. The Fatih Mosque was built in the architectural style of a Turkish-Ottoman domed mosque. The grand opening took place on May 10, 2008. The Mescheder mosque is the first representative mosque in the Hochsauerland district . Many mosques in the Hochsauerlandkreis are located in buildings that were originally used for other purposes.

The Mescheder mosque can be visited by appointment. Otherwise you can visit the Mesched Mosque every year on October 3rd, the day of the open mosques, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
