Fatou Njie-Jallow ( Fatou Bin 'Njie-Jallow , also: Fatou Jallow ) is a former Gambian ombudsperson .

Life

Njie-Jallow worked from at least 2003 in the Gambian Ministry for primary and secondary education , most recently from 2006 to 2011 under Minister Fatou Lamin Faye as Director of Human Resources .

In June 2012 she was sworn in as Deputy Gambian Ombudsman . In August 2013 she took over the official business from Alhagie B. Sowe and finally in November 2014 the office of ombudswoman . At the same time, Ousman GM Nyang , former Director General of the National Training Authority, and Samba Bajie were appointed as deputies. In self-portrayal as well as in the media, she is referred to almost exclusively as an ombudsman and only rarely as an ombudswoman .

The number of cases grew significantly during her tenure. While there were 95 cases in 2013, 190 citizens came forward with their concerns in 2017 and 411 in 2018. Njie-Jallow attributed this increase to the democratic environment after Adama Barrow came to power, which enabled people to exercise their rights.

In April 2019, she called for her mandate to be expanded to include the private sector, as the number of complaints there is increasing sharply.

Effective November 1, 2019, President Barrow appointed officer Baboucarr A. Suwareh to succeed her. On December 18, however, the appointment was not confirmed by the Gambian parliament , as expected , but referred to a committee for discussion because of doubts about its qualifications. On December 27, the National Assembly rejected the appointment with a single pro-vote.

Awards

Njie-Jallow has been the holder of the Order of the Republic of The Gambia at the member level since 2011 .
