Faxholmen Hill

The castle Faxeholm even Faxehus was a medieval castle in Sweden whose remains today in the port area of Söderhamn lie. It was located on the 23-meter-high Faxholmen hill, which was surrounded by the sea in the Middle Ages, but is now connected to the mainland in the course of the post-glacial uplift .

Above ground, only the remains of a terracing and low walls two meters wide and around 30 cm high are left of the castle. Piles of stones were also found, which are likely to have come from collapsed walls. During excavations in 1986 and 1994, the remains of a brick tower were uncovered and other stone and wooden building remains were unearthed .

Sven Sture owned the castle in 1398 when it is first mentioned in a document as Faxaholm . After the destruction during the Engelbrekt uprising in 1434, the castle no longer appears in any documents.
