Fencing feather
The Fechtfeder (also: spring ) is a blunt and flexible training weapon from steel, which instead in the historical fencing schools and in modern fencing past for the long sword training of the long sword is used. It is a bit lighter and narrower than a long sword and has a graduation (cross-guard) in front of the cross- guard to protect the fingers .
The origin of the term “spring” for this training weapon has not yet been fully scientifically clarified. In 1570 fencers, who called themselves feather fencers, formed a guild. It stands to reason that they referred to the fencing feather by the name they gave themselves. When fencing feathers were first used as training weapons can no longer be precisely traced today. Fencing feathers are shown for the first time in representations in the Codex of Danzig, a fencing book from 1452. Since fencing feathers are used for long sword training, it can be assumed that they appeared in the same period as long swords.
