As long sword different types of swords called, each of which was longer than other common sword forms. The term long sword is therefore not clear.

For example, late medieval two-handed swords are known as long swords . Despite their name, the dimensions of the blades differed only slightly from the one-handed combat swords used at the same time . Only the handle was significantly longer and left space for two hands.

Weapons that were already used in Roman times ( spathe ) are also referred to as long swords . The Egyptians , Celts , Franks and other Teutons also used long swords in battle. The name was chosen to differentiate the long sword from the also widespread class of short swords , such as the Roman gladius . However, these are all one-handed swords.
