history
Federal Signal began as the Federal Electric Company around 1920, selling sirens for fire trucks such as the Q Siren and the Model 66 Siren . Around 1950, the company built sirens to signal air and fire alarms, including the Thunderbolt and Model 5 sirens to warn of air raids and fallout during the Cold War.
In 1956 the name was changed to the Federal Sign and Signal Corporation . At the time, the company was selling outdoor sirens, police sirens, and outdoor flashing lights. In 1970 the company was finally renamed Federal Signal Corporation . When sales of outdoor sirens such as the Federal Signal Thunderbolt collapsed in 1990 , the company focused on other products. Production of the Federal Signal 2001 series also began in 1990 .
