The Hel Feldbahn is a narrow-gauge railway with 600 mm gauge near Hel on the Hel peninsula (Putziger Spit), which is still partly used by the military .

history

Around 1915 there was already a battery-operated forest railway with a gauge of 750 mm from Hel to Heisternest on the Hela peninsula, which was laid by the Germans and was used for afforestation and coastal protection. Flying track with a gauge of 600 mm was used to transport the seedlings into the sanctuary and for fishing. The narrow-gauge railway was dismantled in 1921 when a standard gauge track was relocated to Hel.

In the 1930s, the Poles built a military fortress on the peninsula and networked the bunkers with an extensive light rail network. From 1934 to 1939 37 km of narrow-gauge tracks with a gauge of 600 mm were laid. In 1950, parts of the fortification were superfluous and decommissioned, which meant that part of the light rail network was dismantled.

Today the Polish Navy still uses 16.5 km of the light rail network on a route that leads from the port of Hel to a warehouse in the forest. Regular military rail traffic is only available on a 4 km long section of it, which is in the military port area that is not accessible to the public. Two new diesel locomotives were acquired for this in 2016.

On May 1, 2006, the Coastal Defense Museum (Muzeum Obrony Wybrzeża), distributed over several locations, opened. On May 1, 2009, tourist light rail traffic began on a 400 m long route to the B3 Cezar gun. Another 3 km long section was put back into operation in 2013 behind the light rail tunnel, which is now only used by pedestrians. One of the route sections is connected to the narrow-gauge railway used by the military through a normally locked gate.

Rail vehicles

There are several WLs40 diesel locomotives. The historically most interesting locomotives are probably the two locomotives from Zaklady Ostrowieckie ZNTK 291 and ZNTK 308, both built in 1955. There is also a Polish marine locomotive WP11-40372 (works number ZNTK 437 from 1956) and a light rail locomotive from a brickyard (works no . ZNTK 462 from 1956), as well as the modern diesel locomotives of the Navy.

Some freight cars were converted from brigade cars from the First World War by narrowing the car bodies in order to adapt them to the narrow clearance profile of the bunker tunnel passages.
