As rock pools is known in the hunting and the aquarium in which fish are offered with stone constructions caves and retreats and these structures dominate the appearance of the aquarium. As a rule, these are freshwater aquariums in which aquarium plants either do not exist at all or only play a subordinate role. The filtration in these tanks is usually very strong, as the nitrogen conversion in the aquarium is not supported by plants.

Cichlids are very often kept in rock pools . Typical of this type of aquarium is mainly for the attitude of the Mbuna designated cichlids of Lake Malawi . If only these fish species are kept, these aquariums are also called Malawi basins.
