Ablak-Zsiráf

Ablak-Zsiráf [ ˈɒblɒk ˈʒiraːf ] (Window Giraffe) was an encyclopedic reference work for seven to ten year old children (edited by the child psychologists Ferenc Mérei and Ágnes V. Binét ) in Hungary in the 1970s. The book was published by Móra Verlag, the oldest children's book publisher in Hungary. The first article in the dictionary was called ablak , the last zsiráf .

The lemmas and the explanations reflected the historical-political situation at the time. For example, terms from the life of the young pioneers were explained, and many articles were related to the political system of the time. The book was reissued and revised or updated after the democratic change.

The title of this children's lexicon is alluded to by Péter Zilahy's prosaic work “The Last Window Giraffe ” ( Az utolsó ablakzsiráf. ), A “cult book” written as an unusual lexicon about dictatorships in Eastern Europe, which has already been translated into several languages. Ablak-Zsiráf is also available on CD-ROM .
