Fernão Álvares do Oriente

Fernão Álvares , called do Oriente , (* 1530 or 1540 in Goa ; † 1595 or between 1600 and 1607 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese soldier and writer whose only work contributed to the beginning of a national literature.

Life

He was born in Goa, then a Portuguese colony , and came from the lower nobility . He spent most of his life as a simple soldier in the Middle and Far East of Asia .

With his work " Lusitania Transformada " (Transformed Lusitania ) he created the first shepherd novel in Portuguese and at the same time a work that took on the character of a source, mainly because of its vivid depiction of the cultures of China and India . His work was only published posthumously in 1607. It also contains numerous poems .

This novella - one of the few testimonies in Portuguese literature from the pen of a non-scholar - describes for the first time the life of Asian cultures from the point of view of a simple European.
