Ferrocement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferrocement is a special reinforced concrete that is used for thin-walled surface structures, in particular concrete ships or tanks. A close-meshed wire mesh connected with reinforcing iron serves as reinforcement, so that a high degree of reinforcement results. It can be easily curved for various lightweight constructions. In the early days of reinforced concrete in the 19th century, it was used a lot and used to make flower pots, for example.

Ferrocement is rarely used, but was a central component of the roof construction in the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens (SNFCC, construction 2011 to 2017, architect Renzo Piano , design of the Expedition Engineering roof) with a flat roof of 100 by 100 meters.
