Procession for the festival of the Black Nazarene

The Festival of the Black Nazarene is a major religious festival in Manila , Philippines with a grand procession held annually on January 9th .

During the procession, which lasts for many hours, a black statue of Christ (the Black Nazarene ) is carried through the streets of the Quiapo district from the Quiapos Church . Hundreds of thousands to over a million barefoot believers take part in the procession. Many hope that touching the statue will cure illnesses.

The image of the Black Nazarene was made by an unknown Aztec artist in Mexico in 1606 and reached the Philippines with the first group of Augustinians in a Manila galleon , where it arrived on May 31st. The black color is probably due to a fire that broke out on the ship during the crossing.

Hundreds of people were injured during the 2011 celebrations.
