The Fredriksten Fortress is a fortress in the town of Halden , Norway , the 1665 to 1928 Fredrikshald said. It is named after King Frederik III. of Denmark and Norway , who gave the order to build the fortress in 1660 to protect against Swedish attacks. It was designed by the Dutch engineer officer Willem Coucheron and built from 1661 to 1701. During the Swedish siege of the fortress in autumn 1718, King Charles XII died here . from Sweden on November 30th jul. / 11th December 1718 greg. . The siege of Frederikshald ended on January 12, 1719 when the Swedish army withdrew. The withdrawal ended in disaster for the Swedes and became known as the Carolinian Death March . Since the dissolution of the personal union with Sweden in 1905, the fortress has no longer played any role in defending the Norwegian border. It is now home to several museums and forms the backdrop for a variety of events such as theater performances, concerts, exhibitions and sporting events.
