The Robert Johnson (also short Robert ) is a techno club in Offenbach 's Kaiserlei district , which was opened in 1999 by Ata Macias and Sebastian Kahrs on the initiative of Heiner Blum . The club was named after the blues musician Robert Johnson . In the Groove Reader's Poll 2017, the club reached 3rd place.

history

A special feature of this club in 2007/2008 was that the DJs were no longer announced before the parties. This was to prevent the audience from being selected by certain well-known DJs. This is based on the philosophy established by the Underground Resistance group in the techno scene in the 1990s , that the music played by the DJ and not his name or reputation should be decisive. For this purpose no program with name was published, only audio samples were provided on the homepage. This habit was ended in April 2008 because the unannounced program sparked rumors about the evening's line-up that were incorrect. As a result, many visitors came to the club with false expectations and were disappointed by the actual line-up. Since then, the program has been announced again via the e-mail newsletter at the beginning of the month, while audio samples can still be found on the homepage.

Ata Macias and the late Heiko M / S / O are the club's resident DJs . Among the guest DJs were artists such as Sven Väth , Roman Flügel and Ricardo Villalobos . The Robert Johnson is also known for the unofficial after hours that take place after the annual Love Family Park event.

Another feature is that the interior (arrangement of items of equipment such as seat boxes, bar, partition) is regularly changed between events.

Theory events “on the subject of club culture, production and reception of electronic music” have been held at the Robert Johnson at irregular intervals since 2010, which are headed by Heiner Blum as part of his institute for sound research .

In 2010, musician Matthew Herbert recorded various background noises during a club night at the Robert Johnson. The concept album One Club was later created from the recordings .

Live at Robert Johnson

On the occasion of the ten-year anniversary, a series of mixed CDs of the same name was released on the label Live At Robert Johnson, which was set up especially for this purpose, since mid-2009 .

Also in 2010 was Live At Robert Johnson - Limited Edition Box 1–4, a limited compilation that summarizes the first four albums in one box.
