The fortress Hemsö on the island Hemsö was during the Cold War, one of the cornerstones of the coastal defense artillery in Sweden . The location is of strategic importance due to the port in Härnösand and a naval base in Gustavsvik . The idea of a fortress originated in 1883, the first defensive structures were built in 1916. The batteries built in the 1950s and 1960s consist of: A heavy battery on Storråberget with three cannon towers, each with two 15.2 cm cannons. A light battery on Havstoudd with a 7.5 cm cannon.

The aim of the batteries was to defend the coast from enemy warships. The maximum range of the heavy cannon was around 22 km. The batteries were protected by anti-aircraft guns and other types of defense mechanisms in the area. Remnants of the partly well-preserved systems can still be seen.

The main part of the system is 40 meters underground and was then blown into the mountain. There are elevator shafts to bring the projectiles to the cannon on the surface. The underground facility was designed for 340 soldiers who could live in isolation in the event of war or a nuclear attack. The Havstoudd light battery was administered by 112 men. All necessary facilities have been provided, including rooms for controlling the cannons (fire station, etc.), radar and radio systems, power station, technical workshops, rooms for administration, all types of rooms for the daily work of the staff, shop, hospital, etc. The entire facility was closed in 1989.

In 1998 they were declared a special state building. The facilities are owned by the Swedish state and managed by the National Property Agency. In the summer of 2005, a museum and restaurant with meeting rooms was opened in Storåberget (location of the heavy battery).
