Hemsön (also called Hemsö ) is a 54.02 km² island in the Bottensee , northeast of Härnösand in Sweden . It is the main island in Hemsö Municipality and the fourth largest island in Norrland .

Hemsön is mountainous and wooded with high slopes. The island is strategically located in the Ångermanälven Outlet and is home to a number of military installations, including Hemsö Fortress , which is a popular summer excursion destination. There is also a listed wooden church on the island. The church building is in an elevated position in the north. It was built in the neoclassical style between 1856 and 1865. The builder was J. Wassberg, who was also responsible for the drawings.

No prehistoric remains are known on the island, and human settlement probably did not begin until the Middle Ages. In the years 1863–1951 the island formed its own municipality. Then it belonged to the municipality of Säbrå in 1968, after which it was later incorporated into the municipality of Härnösand . The island also has some summer living areas and a campsite on Sågsand, which is a popular sandy beach.
