62.6333 17.9417Coordinates: 62 ° 38 ′ N , 17 ° 57 ′ E Härnösand is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län and the historic province of Ångermanland . The main town of the municipality is Härnösand .

Härnösand has been the seat of a diocese of the Evangelical Swedish Church since 1647 . At that time, this diocese was separated from the Archdiocese of Uppsala in the course of the peace of Brömsebro , when Härjedal and Jämtland became Swedish. It includes the landscapes of Medelpad , Ångermanland , Härjedalen and Jämtland. Härjedalen had previously belonged to the Archdiocese of Nidaros and was only ecclesiastically transferred to the new diocese around 1660. Jämtland was part of the Archdiocese of Uppsala until 1570, although it had belonged politically to Norway since the 12th century.

Other localities are Höggsjö , Ramvik , Rö , Stigsjö , Säbrå , Utansjö , Viksjö , Älandsbro u. a. m. Europastraße 4 runs through the municipality .

Härnösand is a coastal municipality on the Gulf of Bothnia . There are larger islands off the coast. The municipal area rises from the coastal plain to a wooded hill country.

Härnösand is an administrative and trading municipality. Over 50% of the workforce is employed in the public sector (municipality, provincial administration, provincial parliament and military institutions). Only 10% of the workforce works in industry, which is characterized by medium-sized companies and small businesses.
