Utansjö is a place ( småort ) in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län and in the historical province (landskap) Ångermanland .

location

Utansjö belongs to the municipality of Härnösand . The place is about 15 km as the crow flies north of the center of the provincial capital, also the central municipality of Härnösand , on the shore of Lake Mortsjön and not far from the southwestern estuary of the Ångermanälven in the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea . The Utansjöån flows from Mortsjön to Ångermanälven and overcomes a height difference of 35 meters on the short stretch.

A little north of Utansjö, the European route 4 crosses the Ångermanälven with the Högakustenbron , opened in 1997 , the second longest suspension bridge in Scandinavia in terms of span and the second tallest structure in Sweden. Before the bridge, the Reichsstraße 90 branches off , which follows the Ångermanälven up to Meselefors on the European route 45 (Inlandsvägen) in southern Lapland . Utansjö lies on the railway line Sundsvall  - Långsele (Ådalsbanan) , which was opened on this section in 1893 and which was expanded as a southern extension of the Botniabanan for high-speed traffic with partly new routes.

history

Utansjö was mentioned in 1542 in a tax survey for Ångermanland. As a result, the place belonged to the parish of Högsjö, whose churches, built in the 14th century and 1789, are located on the far north bank of the Mortsjön two kilometers from Utansjö. In 1738 an ironworks , Utansjö bruk , started production on the banks of the Ångermanälven , which was in operation until 1878. After a twenty year break, a cellulose factory was built in place of the factory in 1898 . At the same time, a small hydropower plant with an output of 250  kW went into operation to supply them, using the energy from Utansjöån.

In 2008 the last owner, Rottneros AB , closed the factory. The population of the place sank since the middle of the 20th century (1960 it was 513) by about two thirds. In 2015 Utansjö lost its former status of a crime scene due to the excessive distance in the residential development according to the crime scene definition; Instead, the Statistiska centralbyrån reported two småorters on both sides of Utansjöån. The area east of the railway line and the European route up to the previous plant on the banks of the Ångermanälven is no longer part of it.
