Fetometry refers to the measurement of the fetus in the womb using medical ultrasound diagnostics . This examination is part of the prenatal diagnosis and is usually carried out in the second trimester in the 19th to 22nd week of pregnancy .

execution

The following measurements are routinely collected:

  • Biparietal diameter (= GDP )
  • Head circumference (= KU )
  • Abdomen circumference, i.e. the circumference of the fetal abdomen (= AU )
  • Length of the thigh bone (femur length, hence FL )

The weight of the fetus can be estimated from these values .

The following points are also assessed:

  • Position of the child (e.g. skull position ) and the child's back
  • Location of the mother cake
  • Amount of amniotic fluid
  • Child's heartbeat and movement patterns
  • Blood flow characteristics of the maternal vessels nourishing the placenta

If there are any abnormalities, a fine ultrasound can be performed by appropriately trained obstetricians.
