Fire socket

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fire sockets are historical rifles that were used exclusively for target shooting.

They replaced the outdated percussion target rifle around 1870 . They found distribution mainly in the German-speaking area. The systems used were generally single-section drop or swivel block locks that were cocked and opened using the trigger guard .

The stock was anatomically designed for the standing position common in Germany. The 8.15x46R cartridge prevailed as the standard caliber, and was usually fired at 175 meters.

After the First World War , it was increasingly displaced by the small-bore rifle and is now only used at historical shooting events such as the Oktoberfest shooting in Munich and at the shooting clubs in the Austrian Salzkammergut .
