The Fire Brigade Decoration (Saarland) was donated on July 4, 1959 by the then Saarland State Parliament by Prime Minister Hubert Ney to recognize merits in the field of fire protection.

Award requirements and grading

The fire brigade badge of honor can be awarded to all members of the fire brigade , it is irrelevant whether the active service in a voluntary fire brigade or a professional fire brigade took place. The three-tier structure of the fire brigade decoration has remained unchanged from the foundation to the present and includes:

  • Level I: Silver fire brigade decoration on ribbon for 25 years of active service,
  • Level II: Golden fire brigade decoration on ribbon for 35 years of active service,
  • Special level: Golden fire brigade decoration as a plug-in cross .

The special level of honor, in contrast to the first and second levels, is not awarded after years of service, but exclusively for particularly courageous and determined behavior in the fire service. The award of the special level is not limited to members of the fire brigade, but can also be awarded to other people. In addition, the recipient must be worthy of the award, whereby German citizenship is not a requirement for the award.

Special regulation

It was specifically regulated that all levels of the honorary badge can be awarded regardless of the active service time, if members of the fire brigade or other people have made special merits in the field of fire protection .

Appearance and texture

The fire brigade decoration on ribbon consists of an isosceles enamel cross and shows a red flame cross on a white background. The Saarland's coat of arms is placed in the middle. The badge of honor encloses a ring that shows the embossed inscription: For merits in fire protection . The fire brigade badge of honor as a plug-in cross is of the same quality, but has a wreath of oak leaves underneath in place of the ring.

Carrying method

The fire brigade badge of honor of level I and II is worn on a red, white and red ribbon with a silver or gold border on the left side of the chest, depending on what level the entrant has received. The cross is worn as a special step on the left side of the chest.

Award procedure

Ultimately, the Ministry of the Interior, Family, Women and Sport decides on the award of the honorary mark on behalf of the state government. The entrusted receives a certificate of award. When the honorary mark is handed over, it becomes the property of the borrower. After his death it remains as a souvenir for the bereaved.

Deprivation

The fire brigade badge of honor can also be revoked if the entrusted person has become unworthy of the award due to his later behavior, in particular due to a dishonorable criminal act. The same applies in the event that such reasons have only subsequently become known. In this case, the Ministry of the Interior, Family, Women and Sport withdraws the badge after hearing the person concerned.

Retroactive recognition

Holders of a certificate of honor for service in the fire brigade, who received it after May 8, 1945 until July 4, 1949, are entitled to wear the corresponding level of fire brigade honorary badge. In this case, the certificate of honor counts as the award certificate.
