history

The distribution tower with a diameter of 19 meters at the base and 12 meters on the upper platform was built during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) and protected the northeast side of Bally Bay and the southwest entrance of New Quay harbor from possible attacks from 1810 France.

The egg-shaped round tower in the typical Martello Tower design with two levels had a storage area for the storage of ammunition and food supplies and the quarter level with rest areas for the crew. On the top platform of the tower was a pivoting cannon, usually a 32-pounder with 14.5 kg bullets. The usual crew consisted of about ten soldiers who were housed in a nearby barracks. The remains of such a shelter lie northeast of the tower. In the immediate vicinity of the tower there are remains of buildings that were believed to have been able to accommodate around 40 soldiers and were later used by farmers as houses. An inscription, carved in stone, describes the donation : “This property including the Tower and Appurtemances was bequeathed to the State for the benefit of the Nation by MRS. MAUREEN EMERSON who died on the 4th day of November 1999. "
