The Finlandia Hall (Finnish: Finlandia-talo ), which was completed in 1971 based on a design by the architect and city planner Alvar Aalto , is a concert and congress building and today one of the landmarks of Helsinki . The architectural style is functionally oriented - typical for Finland - and offers a lively contrast to the often gloomy landscape. The main auditorium in the hall can accommodate 1,750 visitors. The hall, located on the southern bank of the Töölönlahti Bay , is clad in white Carrara marble and is noticeable from afar. The harsh climate of Finland, however, put the marble slabs hard, so most of the slabs had to be replaced.
The building and its creator are depicted on the Finnish 50-mark banknote . This was the last series before the introduction of the euro.
The CSCE Final Act was signed here in July 1975 .
