Finnish Scientific Society
The Finnish Scientific Society ( Latin Societas Scientiarum Fennica ; Swedish Finska Vetenskaps-Societeten ; Finnish Suomen Tiedeseura ; English Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters ) was founded in 1838. It is an academy for all branches of science and research. According to their own information, their aim is to promote high-quality research through grants, networking and dissemination of information.
The society has full members, foreign members and honorary members. All members are permanent and invited by the plenum of the society. At the age of 67, a full member becomes senior and a new full member is invited.
The society has four departments with 30 full members each, these are:
- I mathematics and physics
- II life sciences
- III Humanities
- IV Social Sciences.
The Society publishes a yearbook, the Sphinx magazine and a number of publications in various fields.
An annual celebration takes place on the birthday of Tsar Alexander II on April 29th .
