The flat back deformity , English flatback syndrome , occurs in some patients after scoliosis surgery with Harrington rods .

root cause

If the normal lumbar lordosis is reduced or eliminated as a result of the straightening operation, the trunk leans forward and hip or back pain is caused by the chronic compensatory posture with premature wear of the intervertebral disc and the adjacent vertebrae ( osteochondrosis intervertebralis ).

distribution

The phenomenon does not appear after all straightening operations, but mainly after fixation of lumbar segments of the lumbar spine .

Not to be confused is the so-called “crankshaft” (crankshaft) phenomenon , which sometimes occurs in young people who have undergone surgery, with increasing rotational misalignment below the surgically fixed vertebral segments due to the further growth of the vertebral bodies.
