Fly cabinet

An old fly cabinet from a farmhouse

A mosquito cabinet is a cupboard for storing perishable food , in which instead of glass panes, there are close-meshed insect screens made of wire or plastic mesh in the doors . In the days when there were still no fridges , they were often the only way to keep food airy without the food being attacked by flies , maggots or similar vermin . As a result, there was an insect closet in almost every household (often in cool basement rooms), and these closets were available in a wide variety of designs and sizes as required.
