The company goes back to the foundation of the Torfstreuverband GmbH on May 21, 1919 in Berlin. Ten years later, in 1929, the “Floratorf” quality brand was created. The peat humus service was founded in 1934 to provide expert advice. After the end of the Second World War, the company moved to the raw materials home of Lower Saxony in 1946. To this day, the city of Oldenburg is the seat of the company headquarters, where more than 75 employees are employed. In 1950 marketing began in other European countries for the first time. For hobby gardeners, potting soil has been available under the brand name "Floragard" since 1987.

The name was changed from Torfstreuverband GmbH to today's company name Floragard Vertriebs-GmbH. In 1992, Floragard co-founded the Goldenstedt Nature Conservation and Information Center. The move to the current location in Oldenburg Tweelbäke took place in 1996. In 2010, Floragard made a clear mark on the hobby market with the relaunch of the Floragard brand. In order to be present in some of the countries with the highest sales, a separate office was established in Alsace in France in 1998 and a subsidiary in China in 2015.

Since it was founded, Floragard has been supported by over 20 independent partners in Germany and the Baltic States, most of whom are the owners of the raw material areas and production plants. The production orders are assigned centrally by Floragard to the shareholders, taking into account stocks, production capacities and transport costs.

Products

Until the beginning of the 1950s, only peat was offered without additional fertilizer. Floragard developed the first peat mixes that combined the benefits of peat and fertilizer. On this basis, numerous new products for professional horticulture and hobby gardeners were created:

  • 1952: Manural and Manuron (mixed peat fertilizer with phosphorus and potassium as well as Manural with nitrogen supplements)
  • 1959: TKS, peat culture substrate (the first industrially produced substrate with added nutrients)
  • 1967: Florahum (special mixture and compost substitute made from various peat, nutrients and microorganisms)
  • 1970: Rhodohum (the first special plant soil for rhododendrons)
  • 1995: Research into the market introduction of peat-free soils begins in the horticultural department
  • 2004: Active potting soil (integrated long-term fertilizer over six months of action)
  • 2009: Organic and peat-free soil range: the ecological mainstay is upgraded with eight different products. Organic or peat-free flower and sowing soil are u. a. expanded to include Florapor as well as peat-free balcony and container plant soils, grave soils and pond soils. In addition, there are so-called “Bio Grow Bags” (a plant tube that enables users to insert seeds and young plants directly into the packaging).
  • 2010: Relaunch of the Floragard brand
  • 2012: New soil in a 20-liter compact format
  • 2013: The first organic soils without peat from Floragard
  • 2015: Expansion of the range of organic soils without peat
  • 2016: Introduction of the vital green lawn care series
