Lists of aviation accidents

The aircraft collision at Sioux Lookout took place on 1 May 1995, when a Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain of the Air Sandy shortly after takeoff from the airport Sioux Lookout with an incoming 23 Fairchild Swearingen Metroliner of Bearskin Airlines crashed. All eight people on board both aircraft lost their lives in the accident.

the accident

Bearskin Airlines' Fairchild Swearingen Metro 23 took off at 1:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. CET) in Red Lake for the 30-minute flight 362 to Sioux Lookout . About 50 kilometers north of Sioux Lookout, the crew received air traffic control permission to begin the approach. At 1:23 p.m. local time (8:23 p.m. CET), the Piper Navajo took off on Air Sandy Flight 3101 from Sioux Lookout. The last communication with the Piper PA-31-350 Navajo Chieftain was at 1:26 p.m. The last radio contact with the crew of the metro was at 1:28 p.m. Moments later, the captain of another plane reported seeing an explosion. The two planes collided in the air at 1:28 p.m. All 8 occupants of both aircraft were killed in the collision.

examination

The investigation came to the conclusion that both crews had seen the other aircraft too late and therefore no evasion was possible. Air traffic control, which did not inform the two crews about the presence of another aircraft in their immediate vicinity, was also partly responsible for this accident.

crew

The crew of the Fairchild consisted of a 27-year-old captain and a 30-year-old co-pilot. The captain had a flight experience of 7330 flight hours, of which 580 were on this type of aircraft. The co-pilot had an experience of 2,810 flight hours, 355 of which on a Fairchild Metro.

The 29-year-old captain of the Piper had 1250 flight hours, 1000 hours of which on the Piper Navajo.
