Foawr

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Foawr (or Fooar ) are a fabulous race of giants or vicious fairies on the Isle of Man and parts of Scotland. They are described as huge and animal-like, sometimes with bull or deer antlers and, according to legend, love to trigger avalanches, throw boulders and steal cattle from farmers. In some legends, the Fooar are considered the sons of the Cailleach , for whom they built the mountains as houses (or prisons).

Best known are the two Loch Ness Fooars , two rival brothers who live on two opposite mountains, one loving the light and the other loving the dark. In the morning the day giant pelts his hated brother with a light rock, which makes the day light, in the evening the other brother pelts his rival with a black rock, which creates the dark night. The Foawr correspond to the Irish and Highland Scottish Fórmorach .
