Folar is a traditional Portuguese holiday food. The preparation of a folar differs depending on the region, but the food is always a sweet yeast dough bread that can be expanded with various ingredients. For example, the Chaves Folar is filled with meat.

Folar is usually given annually by the godfather or godmother to the godchild at Easter . They are only released from this obligation when the sponsored child marries. However, if the godchild goes to his godparents the day after the wedding and brings them a piece of cake, the godchildren have to give the godchild a final gift at the next Easter meal. Over time, the meaning of the word “folar” has changed from the original name of the traditional Easter cake to the name of the gift that the sponsored children receive. A folar gift to the sponsored child no longer has to be a cake.

The basic ingredients are sugar , flour , baker's yeast and eggs . First a bowl is filled with flour and the yeast is added in pieces. Then you press a well in the flour, in which the eggs and sugar are placed. The mixture is then stirred well and shaped into a ball. The dough will then rise covered in a warm place. Then you can brush the bread with egg yolk and decorate it.
