Nutricium foramen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The foramen nutricium ("feeding hole ") is an opening in the bone mantle ( substantia compacta ) of long bones in the area of the bone shaft ( diaphysis ). The foramen nutricium is mostly located in the proximal section of the diaphysis that is close to the body. The main vessel for the nourishment of the bone, which is known as the arteria nutricia , passes through this hole . This artery branches into the vascular canals of the osteons ( Havers canal , Volkmann canal ) and the bone marrow .

The foramen nutricium can be misinterpreted by beginners on an X-ray as an oblique fracture of the bone shaft, since it is seldom clearly shown on the X-ray.
