The Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft mbH ( FFG ) is an organization for the promotion of research and innovation in the field of application-oriented and industry-oriented research in Austria and is 100% owned by the Republic of Austria . The aim is to strengthen Austria as a business location through targeted programs, especially in the research and development area. The federal government is represented by the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology and the Federal Ministry for Digitization and Business Location.
History and organization
The Austrian Research Promotion Agency was founded on September 1, 2004 through a merger of the following four predecessor organizations: Research Promotion Fund for Business (FFF), Technologieimpulse Society (TiG), Austrian Space Agency (ASA) and Office for International Research and Technology Cooperations (BIT ).
Today it is divided into seven areas: Basic Programs, Structural Programs, Thematic Programs, European and International Programs, Aerospace Agency, Project Controlling and Audit, and the Digitization Agency. A strategy department supports the FFG and the responsible ministries in developing research policy strategies.
The offers of the Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft include funding for research and innovation projects by companies, research and university institutes and other organizations in Austria, advice on the selection of the right funding programs and support in applying for European programs and international cooperation projects for Austrian researchers. The FFG is also the national contact point and therefore the contact person for all programs within the framework of Horizon 2020 in Austria. The Aerospace Agency represents Austrian interests at the European Space Agency (ESA).
Through its work, the FFG has extensive access to data on research projects and research collaborations and information on technological trends at European level.
The FFG's services focus on supporting business-related research, but in some programs (e.g. BRIDGE) they are also open to basic researchers. However, its sister organization FWF ( Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research or Science Fund ) is mainly responsible for funding basic research .
Funding programs
The FFG's funding priorities are divided into the following areas:
- Basic programs - funding principle based on the bottom-up process
- Structural programs - structural funding (such as the COMET program )
- Thematic programs - top-down funding as a control element in politics
- Austrian space program
statistics
The FFG employed over 300 people in 2018. In the same year, 833 million euros (total funding volume) were newly approved for a total of 4,326 projects (including funds for broadband expansion).
