Fort Mandan, July 2006

Fort Mandan was set up by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a winter camp , which they used as such from November 2, 1804 to April 7, 1805.

It was about 12 miles from what is now Washburn , North Dakota , on the banks of the Missouri near a Mandan village . On their return trip in August 1806, the expedition found only the charred remains of the fort. The cause of the fire remained unknown. A replica of the former fort is located nearby.
