Exhibitions

Original permanent exhibition (1995-2011)

Palm donkey from the Middle Ages: a temporary exhibit in the previous permanent exhibition

The original permanent exhibition dealt with the everyday life of the residents of today's Switzerland between 1300 and 1800. Urban and rural lifestyles and trade were thematized on the ground floor, while the focus was on the state, society and religion on the upper floor. The top floor provided information about the function of historical images for national cohesion. In a history workshop, visitors could reinterpret history themselves. A stair tower with an overview of selected events in Swiss history up to 1848 formed the connecting element between the floors.

As a newer museum, the forum had many audio and PC stations right from the start in order to make history “tangible” for visitors. Due to the falling number of visitors, the museum management began to redesign the exhibition concept in 2007.

Origin Switzerland (since 2011)

On October 29, 2011, the new permanent exhibition entitled The Origin of Switzerland was opened, which sheds light on the origins of the Confederation between the 12th and 14th centuries from different perspectives. The stair tower was retained, but the tour begins again in the attic, where the focus is on Central Europe's affiliation to the Holy Roman Empire and the emerging wealth of northern and central Italian cities. This leads on to the transport history of the Alps in the Middle Ages, which is illustrated on the upper floor with a mountain structure, among other things. The ground floor deals with the situation in Central Switzerland at that time , from feuds in the immediate empire valleys to the battle of Sempach in 1386.

A relevant part of the objects comes from the fund of the Swiss National Museum, in addition there are some loans from abroad. With its interactive permanent exhibition, the Forum of Swiss History is positioned as a complement to the neighboring Federal Letter Museum and the National Museum in Zurich.

Temporary exhibitions

Various exhibitions alternate in the basement of the museum, especially those relating to the past of Central Switzerland; Cultural and historical events (concerts, lectures) complete the offer.
