Franz Georg Timmesfeld (born July 13, 1943 ) is a German mathematician who deals with group theory (especially finite groups ).

Timmesfeld received his doctorate in 1970 under Bernd Fischer at the University of Frankfurt am Main ( A characterization of the linear groups via GF (2) ). In 1972 he completed his habilitation at Bielefeld University (On characteristic 2 groups). He was a professor at the University of Giessen .

With Michael Aschbacher and William Kantor he organized Oberwolfach conferences on group theory.
