The Franziskus Hospital Bielefeld is a hospital in Catholic-run in the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld . The hospital, known colloquially as "little monastery", has 378 beds; in 2016, 14,937 inpatients and 31,791 outpatients were treated. Franziskus Hospital has been an academic teaching hospital of the Hannover Medical School since 2003 .
history
Pastor Johann Plantholt advocated the construction of a Catholic hospital in Bielefeld in 1869. With the help of the Paderborn Bishop, he managed to get the General Superior of the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis in Aachen to provide three nuns for this purpose. On April 7th, 1869, the sisters' branch was established in the "House of Nazareth", whose modest premises were soon no longer sufficient. Thanks to numerous donations, a new house was built on Bürgerweg in the following year, and after the episcopal consecration in 1871, numerous other extensions followed. In the First World War many war wounded were treated during the National Socialism the house remained largely autonomous. The hospital was badly damaged in a bomb attack in October 1944, but treatment of the patients was continued under life-threatening conditions. After the war ended, the hospital remained popular, and a new building was inaugurated in 1982. The appointment as teaching hospital of the Hannover Medical School took place in 2003. As one of the first hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Franziskus Hospital achieved the successful certification according to the DIN EN ISO 9001 series of standards - to this day, annual monitoring tests are carried out, since 2017 according to the DIN EN ISO 9001: 2015.
