Francis Fountain

The Franziskus-Brunnen is a fountain in the Upper Sandstrasse in Bamberg .

The fountain, which originally stood on the monastery wall of the Kapuzinerstrasse in Kapuzinerstrasse, was moved to Elisabethenstrasse and, based on the planning of the fourth district, placed in the newly created space in front of the Elisabethenkirche.

history

The fountain on the monastery wall was not owned by the monastery, but a public fountain commissioned by the city. It was the end point of the Friedrichsleitung, a several kilometers long water pipeline that ran from the southern area of St. Stephen's immunity through the city and supplied other water intake points.

The fountain, or at least the figure of Saint Francis , was made by the sculptor Johann Kaspar Metzner , who received a fee of 30 guilders for it in 1698. The figure of the saint is made so that water should have flowed out of the wound on the side.

In the course of the preparatory work for the building of the Clavius-Gymnasium , the monastery buildings of the former Capuchin monastery were put down, the fountain was moved to Elisabethenstrasse. In 1958 it was moved to the newly created square in front of the Elisabethenkirche in Oberen Sandstrasse.
