The Fraternity of Man

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Fraternity of Man was an American rock group that formed around Elliot Ingber in 1968.

This guitarist came from the Mothers Of Invention and then formed the Fraternity with Warren Klein (guitar / sitar), Martin Kibbee (bass) and Richard Hayward (drums). Lawrence "Stash" Wagner (singer / guitar) joined them. They played a broad repertoire, from melodic flower power (“Wispy Paisley Skies”) to political songs (“Just Doin 'Our Job”). They played blues-rock and psychedelic-rock, they covered Frank Zappa's “Oh No”, but they are best known for their song “Don't Bogart Me” (also known as “Don't Bogart that Joint my Friend”). The band alluded to Humphrey Bogart , who in many of his roles constantly keeps a lit cigarette in the corner of his mouth. Instead, a joint should be given to other users and shared. 'To bogart' has become an established term in US English meaning "hoarding, keeping to yourself". The song then became part of the soundtrack in the film Easy Rider .
