Free-for-All is the second solo album by the American hard rock musician Ted Nugent . It was released in 1976 and was Ted Nugent's first album to go platinum .

Guitarist and lead singer Derek St. Holmes left the band during the course of the recordings for this album due to personal conflicts with Nugent. Another reason he gave was the direction in which the production of the album was going. Holmes sang on Turn It Up , Light My Way , Dog Eat Dog, and an alternate version of Street Rats that remained unreleased until the album's Epic / Legacy re-release in 1999.

As a replacement for Holmes, producer Tom Werman persuaded an (at the time still) unknown singer named Meat Loaf to take over the vocals on some of the songs. This includes the titles Writing on the Wall , Street Rats , Together , Hammerdown and I Love You So I Told You a Lie . Nugent himself sang the title track on the album. Holmes returned to the group for the following tour after the album was released.

Even without St. Holmes, Ted Nugent was able to consolidate his commercial success with Free-for-All .
