FreeIPA is a free software project supported by Red Hat with the aim of providing an identity , policy and audit system ( IPA ) that is easy to manage . The goals and mechanisms of FreeIPA are comparable to those of commercial providers, such as Novell ( eDirectory ) or Microsoft ( Active Directory ). In contrast to these proprietary systems, FreeIPA bundles several existing open source technologies into one centrally managed system.

FreeIPA uses and implements various components, the 389 Directory Server as an LDAP implementation, Dogtag Certificate System as a PKI implementation, Certmonger service for checking certificates and MIT's Kerberos for authentication and single sign-on . Further requirements are DNS, NTP server, the web UI and for some applications a client. Starting with version 3.0.0, FreeIPA can integrate into an Active Directory with the help of Samba .

FreeIPA supports Linux and Unix operating systems.
