FreeTTS is a program library written in Java that is used for speech synthesis . The name comes from the English : 'Free' indicates the open source property of the library; TTS is the acronym for Text-To-Speech, which means speech synthesis in English.

FreeTTS is one of the implementations of the Java Speech API . It is based on Flite , a speech synthesis system from Carnegie Mellon University , which in turn is based on the Speech Synthesis System Festival of the University of Edinburgh and the FestVox project of Carnegie Mellon University.

Some of the FreeTTS code was imported into MaryTTS to provide English support.
