The Angel of Peace in Paderborn

The Angel of Peace is a mural in the center of the Westphalian city of Paderborn . The design comes from the painter, comic artist and designer Herman Reichold , the picture was implemented by Dietmar Ahle in 2005.

At the suggestion of a primary school class, the square in front of the mural was renamed "Friedensplatz" in 2008.

description

As a 74 square meter artistic representation, the Angel of Peace is intended to stimulate the viewer to reflect and remind them that peace cannot be taken for granted. A red rose in the left hand is said to be a sign of charity and peace, the index finger in front of his mouth asks for silence. In the lower part of the picture is the sleeping city.

Next to a plexiglass board with the word “peace” in 130 languages, a digital counter is installed that counts every visitor who touches a button next to the mural. The number of “anonymous peace donors” was over 80,000 in November 2009.

A wall was chosen as the location, which was the only wall left in Dietmar Ahle's former parents' house after an air raid in 1945.
