The Friedenskirche is a Protestant church in Darmstadt .

history

The Friedensgemeinde was founded on March 23, 1953, by ordinance of the church leadership. An independent parish was to be established in the so-called “publishing district” of Darmstadt. On June 29, 1953, the elected parish council established the name "Friedensgemeinde" for the new parish. In 1954 the construction of the community center with community hall and apartments was completed. In 1955 the kindergarten was completed.

The community center of the Friedensgemeinde has long been considered a prime example and for many years it was depicted in the Hessian "Religionsbuch". Only then was a church built, which was consecrated on June 27, 1965. Like the community center, this building was based on a design by the architect Karl Gruber - a simple interior with a raised choir and side arcades . The windows were designed by Bruno Müller-Linow . The focal point of the Friedenskirche is the altar cross designed by Fritz Schwarzbeck , which - citing Romanesque models - shows the risen Christ. A large gold-plated crown of thorns hovers above it.

Others

The Peace Community has had several pastors who have helped shape the community in their long-term service:

  • Pastor Otto Ring achieved national fame through the words on Sunday that he spoke in the years 1962–65.
  • Locally famous were the Kumbaya services, which were celebrated from the late 1960s and which incorporated modern elements, especially music, into the liturgy.
  • Many Darmstadt residents associate the "Evangelical City Academy" Darmstadt with Pastor Meinold Kraus, which he headed from 1990 onwards.
  • Since the Peace Community had its own church, the community center could be made available to the Greek and Serbian congregations for worship.
  • Later, the Evangelical University Congregation and the Catholic University Congregation organized joint events and church services.
  • Today Ethiopians use the rooms for their worship meetings. This addresses the topic of ecumenism, which is particularly close to the heart of the peace community.
  • If the Friedensgemeinde was a young community with many new families when it was founded, the focus of work had meanwhile shifted to the mostly older people.
  • In the former "publishing district", many students now live in newly built apartment buildings, so that half of the community members are between 18 and 35 years old.
