The Blankenburg cemetery is a state-owned cemetery in the Berlin district of Blankenburg . In the systematics of the district it is Friedhof Pankow X. Berlin cemeteries are numerous due to the historical development of the city and distributed over the city area.

location

Registered in the Berlin cemetery list as number 5074, it is located at the beginning of Kastanienallee and extends into the depths of the property towards Karower Damm. In addition to the entrance from Kastanienallee, there is another entrance from the direction of Karower Damm.

history

The park cemetery was laid out in 1893 and has a size of 10,116 m². Originally laid out to the north-east outside the village, it is now located in the midst of single-family houses on the eastern edge of the district.

The celebration hall from the beginning of the 20th century was destroyed in the Second World War. Since it was restored on the old foundation walls during the war, the renovation from July 2003 to spring 2005 was urgent. The celebration hall is designed according to its purpose, the architecture is very purpose-oriented.

At the Blankenburg cemetery, on both sides of the path from the main entrance to the rear part of the cemetery, there is the honorary complex for victims of war and tyranny. These 78 individual graves have been given new grave symbols and are subject to the Berlin Graves Act. The memorials lie as inclined ceramic plates within a concrete stone ring on the grave site. They are provided with the names, dates of birth and death, as far as these are known, and the information "1939–1945", which were added in depth when the ceramic plates were fired. The grave fields missing here in the grid were reburied in other cemeteries by relatives.

The change in the district of Blankenburg was followed by the administration of the municipal cemetery, previously run as the Pankow X cemetery, but due to the administrative change in 1970 it became the Weißenseer Friedhof.

Since the need for cemetery space in Berlin is falling, it was decided in May 2008 to partially close the unused part of the unaffected areas. The areas therefore do not have a blocking period as is necessary for burial areas and will be converted to the status "short-term use as grass areas". The area of the cemetery is reduced by 0.24 ha.
